• Definition Caption Text

Caption text is a short text that is used to complete an image. Writing captions that are embedded under photos or pictures are usually written with a mature mind so that the upload can be liked by people who see it.

Caption text appears usually under pictures, photos, graphics, posters and even tables.

• Functions Caption Text

in its manufacture has several functions, including: 

1. As an addition to the credibility of an image or video that is given a caption. That way, the image or video will be perceived as real. 

2. As a way to get lots of people interested in watching videos or pictures. In addition, the use of caption text also provides an explanation of the images or videos that have been posted. 

3. Complete information from photos or images that have been published on social media or print media. With caption text, readers will easily understand the intent of the video or image.

• Types Caption Text 

1. Identification This type of caption text is usually used to describe or identify everyone in the photo, but does not explain a story. The focus on caption text for this type of identification is clarity. 

Example : 

> Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie with her impressive children

> Amazon founder Jeff Bezos with his favorite car Honda Accord 1997

2. Group Captions are usually used to describe multiple images. This caption should have at least two sentences per image and include quotes where possible. 

Example : 

> Beyonce and her daughter were seen in Los Angeles attending a wedding. They both wore pink dresses and were seen entering the venue with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West.

> Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and other marvel stars assemble for an epic class photo in honor of Marvel Studios 10th Anniversary in New York.

3. Summary For this type of caption summary, it usually contains an explanation of the subject in the picture, the activities carried out in the picture, the time of the incident, the location of the incident and the reasons why the activity was carried out. 

Example : 

>  A Jakarta Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) officer watches over the morning exercises for asymptomatic COVID-19 patients isolating at the Wisma Atlet in Kemayoran, Center Jakarta, on Sep. 4, 2020. Thousands of COVID-19 patients are dying at home in self-isolation, partly due to a lack of monitoring and medical supplies.

>  A security personnel stands guard at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic and Paralympic Village entrance in Rio de Janeiro on August 3, 2016, ahead of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, which begin on August 5.)

4. Quotes caption means that it contains a sentence quote from someone in the picture.

Example : 

> You must tell yourself, no matter how hard it is, or how hard it gets, I’m going to make it’ – Les Brown

>  I will not lose, for even in defeat, there’s a valuable lesson learned, so it evens up for me’ – Jay Z.

5. Cutlines  type captions are the ones most often found in pictures and writings printed on newspapers and media, both offline and online media. 

Example : 

> Rachmawati Soekarnoputri, the second daughter of Sukarno visits residents of the Luar Batang area of North Jakarta on May 26, 2015.

6. Expanded caption is the type of caption that has the most complete information. In accordance with the type name, this expanded caption text is the development of the previous text, especially from the summary caption.

Example : 

> British journalist Martin Bashir arrives at Santa Barbara County Superior Court in Santa Maria to be the first witness to be called at Michael Jackson’s child sex abuse trial. The BBC was under pressure on May 21, 2021, after unprecedented criticism from the royal family about its 1995 interview with princess Diana, damaging its reputation as it fights attacks on several fronts. • Language Features Captions 

There are several linguistic features that are usually used in captions, including: 

- Prepositional phrases 

- Infinitive -phrases 

- Participial phrases 

- Adjective phrases 

- Questions 

- Exclamations

• How to Write Caption

- Observe the selected photo or video

- Find out the message from the picture

- Write concise phrase or sentence under the picture
